Danger In The Water - The Problem Of Lake Weeds
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios
Weeds grow everywhere, it seems. Not only are they natural occurrences in gardens all over the world, but they can also grow in bodies of water where the surface is almost always stagnant. We're talking about lake weeds, primarily, or those green, grass-like plants that grown in lakes in great numbers, capable of taking over the said body of water at such a rapid pace.
Lake weeds present a real danger to aquatic life. They steal essential nutrients from beneficial plants in the water system. Some lake weeds are also poisonous for smaller fishes. The most glaring disadvantage that this weed type brings to the table, however, is there ability to make the lake look unsightly.
Of course, these are just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. The repercussions are far deeper than we can ever imagine. Because of all the perils that lake weeds bring into the system, the lake's ecosystem suffers a terrible hit. The balance is disturbed, and the consequences can be grave. Beneficial plants will dwindle in numbers. Small fishes will have nothing to feed on, and they will eventually be wiped out from the lake. Bigger fishes will have nothing to prey on, and they will likewise be obliterated from the lake as well.
The result is a lake that is devoid of like... a dead lake that will provide moroseness to the immediate environment. Such is not a pretty sight.
These aquatic weeds also pose dangers to humans who use the lake for a variety of purposes. They can tangle up the rotor blades of a boat's motor. They can become the breeding ground of dangerous animals such as water snakes, mosquitoes and the likes. And of course, they can decimate the aquatic population, leading to the death of the financial prospects of the lake for fishermen, hunting guides, aquaculture harvesters, and similarly situated folks.
Truly, something must be done about weeds that grow in lakes. Many people try the manual approach, that is, hand pulling the weeds from the water. But given the buoyancy of the water and the difficult positions required for the task, this is not a highly effective strategy.
Hence, people have started to use herbicides to get rid of these weeds. There are some herbicides that are specially formulated to kill water weeds, without causing harm to other plants as well as fishes. This has been proven to be the most efficient method in curtailing the growth, and eliminating the presence, of unwanted weeds.
